Joe Ammann grew up on a ranch in South Dakota. His parents, Merlyn and Sharon Ammann, married in 1962 at the age of 19, and soon they bought their own ranch in Wilmot, South Dakota. It became a great place to raise a family. Joe started riding two-year olds for his father at the age of 9. He grew to love horses and training them. Then at 15 years old, Joe fell in love with the sport of cutting horses and decided it would be his future. While at Bill McNeil’s (World Champion Cutting Horse Trainer) facility, Joe asked Bill how much Cutting Horse discipline lessons would cost. Bill offered Joe a horse named, Reckless Rose, and let him train her. Amazingly, he provided lessons to Joe for free. It was at this point that Joe began his career as a Cutting Horse Trainer. Horses that Joe has trained have won over $1 million.
Joe has trained with top cutting horse trainers throughout his career:
Ronnie Rice: Three-time NCHA Futurity Champion, with winnings over $4.8 million.
Larry Reeder: 1978 Futurity Champion on a two-year-old mare, just over 13 hands. Other titles he earned among many more are: NCHA Futurity Reserve Champion and Reserve Title of the NCHA Super Stakes.
Bill James: Inducted into the APHA hall of fame in 2012; Judged 9 AQHA World Championships; Ranch Horse Versatility Champion at the National Livestock Show; and Winner of 3 APHA National Titles.
At 2UW Brush Creek Ranch Joe Ammann continues his Cutting Horse Training. He trains 2 and 3 year old futurity and show horses. Horsemanship and reining lessons are available. Throughout the year, Joe travels as a professional NCHA AAAA judge, plus PCCHA judge.
